PRESEPE IN TERRACOTTA, Sicilia, circa 1920: Presepe popolare antico con figure in terracotta di altezze variabili tra i 6 e i 10 cm, realizzato in Sicilia nella zona di Barcellona (Messina) intorno al 1920. Altro graziosissimo esempio di arte sacra popolare. Discrete condizioni generali, anche se diversi pastorelli hanno lesioni e incollaggi. Il presepe proviene dall'assemblaggio di più composizioni dello stesso artigiano, forse è meno completo di quello che vedete sopra (manca il bambinello) ma è ancora più ricco di elementi tipici siciliani, con figure e gruppi di figure in costume tradizionale intente a vari mestieri raffigurati e fichi d'India. Estremamente fragile. Il presepe proviene dalla Collezione Fazio di Messina, oggetto di varie mostre e pubblicazioni.
TERRA-COTTA (baked clay) NATIVITY FIGURE SET, Sicily, circa 1920: Ancient crèche (crib), folk-art nativity set with terra-cotta figures, tall from 6 to 10 centimeters, crafted in Sicily in the area of Barcellona (Messina) around 1920. Charming example of ethnic folk sacred art. Good overall conditions, although several figures have cracks, missing and re-glued parts. The crib comes from several sets built by the same craftsman, is less complete than the other one you see in this website (misses the Infant Jesus), but is very nice and even richer than the other, with many sheperds with traditional sicilian costume, groups of figures (a table of country women, etc.), several figures busy at various jobs, and is enriched by typical sicilian plants (Indian figs). Very fragile. This crib comes from the Fazio Collection of Messina , which was featured in many books and shows.
